Level Crossings

The Victorian Transport Plan and the additional plans contained in the book "Transport Plan - An Alternative Option" include nineteen grade separations. The first is Kororoit Creek Road on the express lines between Newport and Laverton. Following that, five level crossings will be eliminated as part of the South Morang Rail Project, from Settlement Road in Thomastown to Childs Road in Epping.

Between 2011 and 2014, the Caulfield Quadruplication and Grade Separation Project will remove four level crossings between Caulfield and Oakleigh and another five between Caulfield and Bentleigh. Then the Newport-Laverton Capacity Upgrade Project will remove another three crossings, and finally the Riversdale project will remove two more.

However, that still leaves hundreds of level crossings in the Melbourne metropolitan area and even more in regional Victoria. In 2008 the state government released an analysis of all level crossings in Victoria, ordered by risk and therefore priority for grade separation. Some of these crossings have been dealt with since the report was published; others are listed for removal as part of one of the projects above.

Of the remainder, Smart Passengers sees the highest priorities as:

  1. Springvale Road (Springvale)
  2. Mitcham and Rooks Roads (Mitcham)
  3. Main and Furlong Roads (St Albans)
  4. Cherry and Werribee Streets (Werribee)

Projects to remove these level crossings should be budgeted as soon as possible.
